Interactive Design. The NODROD.

Interactive Design. The NODROD.

Interactive design was probably the most challenging class I took last semester. For me, it was way out of my comfort zone.

I also feel it was the most most rewarding. To succeed at something that you are daunted by is a pretty greta feeling.

We were tasked with redesigning a website, or making one up. The requirements that we had to keep in mind were: 1) We had to guide the user through a checkout experience and 2) we would have to integrate an Internet Of Things aspect as well.

My project revolved around a fictional device that my wife and I called the “nodrod”. The idea is a device that you would place on your child’s ankle or wrist (the band would be expandable), and with an app you would control the amount of Melatonin produced, inducing sleep.

As a parent of a child who, seemingly, never sleeps, this would have been amazing 🙂 I went in with a fair amount of humor with the idea, but took the process seriously.

Below you can see a product mockup which showcases the the desktop product site, mobile site, and the App. I’ve also included a user journey and links to the FAKE website and mobile app.

From the app, you set the length of time that you want the kid to sleep.

I used adobe Muse of the site, and adobe Experience Design the the mobile version and app.

Check ’em out from the links below! (try the app on your phone.) Use the K.O function to knock that kid out! The app is NOT functional, it’s basically static screens linked to other static screens. There was no programing involved.

DLC office signs

DLC office signs

I’ve been doing some more “design-y” stuff this summer at KCAD. I’m digging trying some new things and venturing out of my comfort zone of cartooning.

Directional signs for the offices. We ended up going for the bottom two.

Here’s a short strip I did to promote the KCAD DLC this summer.

Traditional pencil and ink. Digital coloring (PS), lettering(Illustrator), and layout in InDesign.

Besides some future tweaks…here’s page 6!

Not quite sure how the whole thing is working. Trying to focus more on storytelling with color than true local colors.

I’m quickly reminded of how much I dislike flatting. That said; this page went the quickest in that regard.

I also took some time to experiment on this one, though it may not show. Slowed me down a little, but it’s nice to try new things…even if they don’t work.

This is also where the character Billy begins to separate from the group more. I wanted to show his detachment on some subconscious level.

Out with the old, in with the new, and back to the new old…again…

Out with the old, in with the new, and back to the new old…again…

It’s been an interesting 1+ year for me. I took some time off from comics, thought I was done, went into carpentry for a little bit, now I’m back.

Not by my will, but I’ll take it as a sign that I need to be where I belong…in comics.

I have a renewed energy and a different outlook towards what I was doing before!

Plus, making comics doesn’t entail having to work in -20 degree weather. Eff that.

So, while there’s a little lull in my transition (re-transition), I have, to my wife’s great pleasure, decided to finish and color my Melonheads story.

Plus I need some new samples.

Here’s to a new, familiar, better path!

I AM….

I AM….

…Iron Man!

I never quite know what’s okay to post from our Hi-Fi work for Disney Publishing Worldwide, but I figure that there are enough of these Iron Man books out, that sharing a turn isn’t going to to hurt.

Can’t wait to see the new movie!
